After weeks of knocking on the door of a major victory, the Royall softball team finally found a way to take a late lead and hold onto it, defeating New Lisbon 4–3 in 12 innings Monday afternoon.

The Rockets entered conference play on Monday tied with Cashton for the league lead, and Royall came in with a comfortable hold on sixth place in the league.

New Lisbon took a 1–0 lead in the second inning on a grounder that allowed one to score.

In the third inning, Emily Olson recorded the first hit for Royall and was followed by a bunt courtesy of Emma Herek, but the Panthers still were held scoreless in the inning.

To lead off the fourth inning, Kelsey Vieth reached second on an error and scored on Nicole Miller’s double. Olson’s second single of the day scored Miller, and Royall took a 2–1 lead.

Neither team could come up with another run until the bottom of the seventh inning, when New Lisbon, still trailing 2–1, put one on via a walk and was moved to second with a sacrifice and to third with a single. Callie Bever drove in the tying run on a fielder’s choice, but the Rockets’ rally was ended in the next at-bat.

In the next four innings, New Lisbon stranded four runners in scoring position and Royall left four on. The Panthers had bases loaded in the ninth, but were forced out at home for two of the three outs.

Finally, in the top of the 12th inning, Royall broke through. Kelsea Storkel led off with a double and moved to third on a ground ball by Allyson Stanek. Storkel took advantage of a passed ball by taking home and giving Royall a 3–2 lead. Kelsey Vieth singled, and then stole second base before being batted in by Nicole Miller, giving the Panthers a 4–2 advantage.

New Lisbon quickly put runners in scoring position, scoring one, but left one on third after a Savannah Dalhke’s strikeout, which ended the game.

Olson, Vieth, Nicole Miller and Kirstin Lunde each picked up a pair of hits in the victory. Miller recorded 2 RBI and two stolen bases as well. Also, Vieth tallied two runs and two stolen bases.

The Panthers added two more in the third, but allowed four in the fourth, when Necedah took a 10–9 lead.

The response in the bottom of the fourth was a 3-run rally. Nicole Miller had an RBI single to score Hyer and tie the game, and then went on to steal home on a grounder hit by Kirstin Lunde. Kelsey Vieth also took home in the same play, and the home team held a 12–10 advantage again.
