Cheyenne Valley, located in eastern Vernon County, has long been celebrated as an early African American settlement in Wisconsin, but that is not the whole story, according to La Farge historian Kevin Alderson.
Alderson will speak on the subject at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Lawton Memorial Library, 118 N. Bird St., La Farge. This program is free and open to the public.
Several historians have researched the story of the tri-racial (African, European and Native American ancestry) settlement that developed in the town of Forest.
But the history has been “generally focused on certain aspects of the original pioneers, and a comprehensive story has not yet been presented,” according to a press release prepared by Lawton Memorial Library.
Alderson will present an evening of historical information gleaned from his research on the Cheyenne Valley settlement, sharing information he has found in his research on the tri-racial isolate that has come to be known as Cheyenne Valley.
