By LAURIE ERICKSON

Ontario Public Library director

The next playgroup will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Ontario Public Library. The Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton Elementary School Preschool Options program provides the playgroups, which are for children from 3–5 years old and promote school readiness.

Mark your calendars now for a travel night to remember. At 6 p.m. Saturday, March 24, the library will host a program entitled “The Best of the British Isles,” with tales of England by Wayne Barrett, Scotland by Gina Rae and Ireland by Julie Hoel. Lauren West will be the chef for the evening, with dishes inspired by the isles. The cost is $20 per person, and proceeds will benefit the Ontario Public Library. Please RSVP by Friday, March 16, at 337-4651.

Hot Reads for Cold Nights is our reading promotion for adults this winter. This week’s winner is Connie Meyer, who won some candy and a travel mug. Read or listen to a book, complete a review form and return it to the library to enter your name in a drawing for a weekly prize. The more you read, the better your chance of winning. Drawings will be held each Monday through Wednesday, Feb. 28.

The media-conversion lab will be at the library through February. The kits convert VHS tapes into DVDs and audiocassettes or vinyl into compact discs.

The library’s Knit a Cowlette class will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 16. Karen Austad will lead us in starting a small cowl, which is a shawl that is closed in front. The class will learn how to knit a garter tab cast-on, read a chart and knit lace. There is no charge, but bring one skein (300 yards) of DK yarn and a 24-inch long, size-5 circular needle.

The book group will discuss “As Good as Gone” by Larry Watson at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14. Stop by the library for a copy if you would like to join the discussion.

Raffle tickets are on sale now. The Ontario Knit Wits are having a raffle to support the library. There are eight themed prizes, including a signed Green Bay Packers football and a handmade quilt. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased at the library or from a Knit Wits member. The drawing will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 6, at the library. The raffle license is R0033220A-93906.
