Though the Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton School District administration had expected the 2013–14 budget would have about a $500,000 deficit, that figure came in at about $250,000 instead, Superintendent Kelly Burhop told the board of education at its meeting Monday.
The lunch program was one major factor in the discrepancy, as it made money for the first time in many years, reflecting a $31,500 decrease in expenditures.
The other overbudgeted items were in smaller amounts and included a range of items, such as electricity and telephone, attorney fees, maintenance, supplies and travel expenses.
On the revenue side, the district received $63,000 in high-cost transportation categorical state aid.
In all, the district received $91,000 in unbudgeted revenue.
Other business
• As of Sept. 2, the district’s unofficial head count was 725 students, a drop from last year’s figure of 728. Last spring enrollment was 745.
• According to Principal Brad Pettit, the Falcon Booster Club had donated $100 to the Kickapoo Valley Reserve for its Creative Communities Art Demonstration, a program in which N-O-W students took part last spring.
• The board approved one incoming and five outgoing alternate open-enrollment applications.
The alternate applications are for students who did not meet the open-enrollment deadline last spring.
None of the outgoing applicants had ever attended school at N-O-W, Burhop said. Rather, in most cases, they wished to remain in school districts in which had been previously enrolled.
• The district recently made its last interest payment on the 2000 Wilton building addition and will make the final principal payment in March.
• The board approved a contract with teacher Lisa Stoikes for behind-the-wheel driver’s education.
