Letter to the editor: Gun-rights arguments shouldn’t be absolutist

By DON FOY | La Farge

Here it is again: Parkland. There are people claiming that students from the high school there, and other high schoolers nationwide, who are protesting gun laws have been paid to protest.

I doubt that, but if they have been, so what? The kids are politicizing this tragedy? I say, go for it!

Politicians have been paid serious money with legal bribes from the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other right-wing super PACs to not only defend, but also expand our extreme gun laws for years. That’s blood money. The Second Amendment clearly states that the right to bear arms is in the context of a well-regulated (controlled by authorities) militia. That would be the National Guard.

Most recognize that guns are historically deep into our culture, and we’ve expanded the rights of gun ownership way, way beyond any militia. Okay, fine. Everybody hunts deer. But this absolutist attitude of anyone, any gun, anywhere, is crazy. And the idea that thorough background checks, and restricting semiautomatic weapons, wouldn’t save any lives is nonsense. The rest of the world knows that, and the politicians and lobbyists who defend it will never wash these kids’ blood from their hands.
