There’s no doubt that all eyes will be on Friday’s matchup between Bangor and Brookwood, each of which looks to maintain its hold on first place in the Scenic Bluffs Conference.

Each team has just a single loss in league play and a combined three losses altogether on the season.

The winner will get to hold not only the league lead, but also a giant target as the season wraps up. Both teams will face Hillsboro, Cashton and Royall again, all teams with winning records, before the sun sets on the 2015–16 conference season.

In the first meeting this year, Bangor led 38–16 at halftime, but Brookwood made a spirited comeback before taking a 68–45 loss. ExpectCoach Greg Dull to have made adjustments in order to best challenge the Cardinals. Dull has been swept by Bangor only once in his first three seasons at the helm of the Falcons’ girls basketball program.

Brookwood 77, Necedah 48

Hot off its 50–38 win over state-ranked Bangor, the Necedah girls basketball team entered its contest at Brookwood with a new sense of confidence on Jan. 28. A speedy Brookwood team quickly brought the Cardinals back to earth with a 77–48 win.

The Cardinals opened the game strong, but by the 15-minute mark, they showed signs of struggle, as they couldn’t maintain their offensive output from the beginning of the contest. The Falcons complicated matters when they took advantage of Necedah turnovers, both forced and unforced, and converted them into points.

At halftime, Brookwood led 39–24 and repeated the feat in the second half to nearly double up the Cardinals on the scoreboard.

Briana Nelson’s 20 points led all scorers on the night. Allyson Nelson added 17, and Lydia Madrigal had 8. Angel Brueggen and Ellen Marriott each added seven. Necedah’s Elyssa Sheley scored 17 in the loss.

Brookwood improves to 13–2 overall and 8–1 in league play and will travel to Bangor on Friday and Luther on Monday before getting its final game of the year with Royall on Thursday, Feb. 11.

Cashton tops Dahlen and company

Things seemed to be going right all of the time for the Royall Panthers earlier this season and in their first meeting with Cashton back in December. However, the team has struggled since the calendar switched to 2016, as the team is just 2–5 in January. That brings its overall record to 9–6 on the season.

Last week’s 47–35 loss at Cashton was another misstep that the team will have to learn from as it enters the final stretch of the season.

The Panthers kept things tight in the early minutes at Cashton. But the Eagles landed a few shots and converted free throws to take nearly a double-digit lead in the first half. Royall stayed tenacious on offense, though, and climbed to within two just before halftime. In the second half, Cashton built on its lead, outscoring the visitors by 10 and earning the win.

Cashton’s Jamie Schmitz led all scorers with 15. Lexi Schroeder also scored 10 for the Eagles. For Royall, Paige Hyer and Kelsea Storkel each scored 9, and Nicole Miller added 6 in the loss. Coach Andrew Dahlen falls to 8–8 against the Eagles in conference play and is 9–8 all-time against Cashton.

Royall will try to get its groove back Thursday as at New Lisbon (4–11). Following that game, the Panthers will play Blair-Taylor (8–8) at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells on Saturday. Royall’s game against Wonewoc-Center (1–13), which was scheduled for Tuesday, will be made up Feb. 12.
