It took an overtime to fend off New Lisbon on Jan. 24, but the Brookwood girls basketball team won the war of attrition to come away with a 55–51 win at home.

“It’s like we would play one good half and one bad half,” said coach Bob Berg about his team’s performance throughout the season. “It was nice to put a complete game together.”

The win stopped a six-game losing streak for Brookwood, which dated back to the first game of January.

Noemi Nicolas, who ended with 10 points, scored only a single field goal in the second half. However, that basket was a big one. It was the one to tie the game at 47 with nine seconds left, eventually leading to overtime.

Brookwood outscored New Lisbon 8–4 in overtime. Hailey Schueller scored 3 of her 9 total points in OT.

Shelly Powell came off the bench and led the team with 16. Also, Kate Hyatt had 8, all in the second half. New Lisbon’s Mya Delgado scored 16.

Brookwood head coach said that his team had been hurt by injuries all season, and even though kids had stepped up, they weren’t able to be consistent in certain positions.

“(This win) gives us confidence to finish the season strong. I don’t think we’ve played our best ball yet,” said Berg.

Brookwood girls drop four straight

Parity has been a theme for both the boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons in the Scenic Bluffs Conference.

Another piece of evidence? Wonewoc-Center avenged a 19-point loss to Brookwood on Dec. 18 with a 50–47 win Feb. 1.

Brookwood led 22–20 at halftime, but Wonewoc-Center came back. Riley Nielsen and Shelby Justman combined for 21 second-half points as they led the Wolves’ charge to help the team lock up its second league win of the year.

Hailey Schueller led the Falcons with 17 total points. Cassidy Green helped out by putting in 10 points, and Kate Hyatt added 6.

Hillsboro defeated Brookwood 71–36 on Feb. 5, and Royall pinned a 70–40 loss to the Falcons’ resume on Feb. 8. On Monday night, Brookwood suffered a 75–46 loss at Cashton.

WIAA Regionals

Brookwood will travel to Luther to start the opening round of WIAA regional play on Feb. 19. The Knights defeated the Falcons 48–25 on Jan. 21.
