I don’t often respond to editorials, but one from your Dec. 1, 2016, edition, written by Mr. Wester, caught my attention. Mr. Wester’s assessment of the current state administration and its inability to monitor and protect Wisconsin’s beautiful natural resources is heart-wrenching.

I have been coming to the Kickapoo Valley and to Wildcat Mountain State Park my entire life, nearly 69 years. I have never seen the park and especially the trail system in such deplorable condition.

Believe me, this is not meant to cast fault or to disparage park personnel, whoever is left of these hard-working people. They have done their absolute best under extreme conditions. Those conditions include huge cutbacks in staff, drastic cuts in state park budgets, a lack of interest in the Wisconsin park system, and a “rob Peter to pay Paul” solution to park problems.

Mr. Wester, your assessment of the state government being deceitful is totally correct, and your editorial addressing current and past discretions is spot on. The state’s lack of addressing these conditions is deplorable and indefensible.
