Gladys Marie Geier

Gladys Marie Geier, 90, of Hopkinsville, Ky., passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, at Shady Lawn Nursing Facility in Cadiz, Ky.

She was born April 24, 1931, to Frank and Ethel (Byington) Degner. Gladys grew up on the family farm in Wonewoc. She graduated from Wonewoc High School in 1949. Gladys was united in marriage to William “Bill” Geier on July 14, 1951, at Saint Matthew’s Lutheran Church in rural Ontario. Together they farmed in Black Valley south of Wilton, Wis., for 25 years.  In 1976, they moved to Hopkinsville, Ky., for a warmer climate. Together they enjoyed their country home, where she cared for her cats and dogs.  She was an excellent seamstress and great cook. They were lifelong members of WELS and Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Bill; her children, Angela (Donn) Heath of Wilton, Carolyn (Dave) Hancock of Warrens, David Geier of Milwaukee, and Michael (Doris) Geier of Norwalk; her grandchildren, Mandy, Brandon, Leigh Ann, Hannah, Tiffany, Scott, Chelsea and Michael; eight great-grandchildren; her brother, Orlo “Bud” Degner; her niece, Cher; and her nephew, Doug. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Ethel; her daughter, Dianne Hatzung; her sister, Edith Ziesch; her sister-in-law, Thelma Degner; and her brother-in-laws, Larry Geier and Wally Ziesch.

A special thank you to Pastor Holz for his visits and prayers, to Joe, Betty and Holly Stevens for all of the care they have provided, and to the staff of Shady Lawn Nursing Facility for the care and friendship over the last few years.

A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Service date and time will be announced by the Smith-Nelson/Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home.
