For the entire month of April, the Brookwood softball team flew under the radar.

Due to weather, the team lagged behind its conference opponents in the number of games it had played; therefore, it seemed Brookwood had been forgotten in the Scenic Bluffs Conference race.

But a turn of the calendar forced a turn of play level for Brookwood, which played five games in the first eight days of May after playing just nine in all of the previous five weeks. The best may be yet to come, as the Falcons are eyeing up an important rematch with Bangor and two games with the other conference leader, Cashton.

Last week, Brookwood finished 3–2 in its five games and went 2–1 in conference play to improve to 11–4 overall and 7–3 in the Scenic Bluffs.

Brookwood 10, Royall 5

Brookwood started league play in May with a 10–5 decision at Royall on May 2. Though the Panthers outhit Brookwood 10–7, they committed eight errors in the field, allowing the visiting Falcons to score 6 unearned runs.

Ellen Marriott landed two hits and three RBI in the win. Alexa Watters had two hits, and Karina Hansen drove in three runs.

Amy Berg struck out eight and walked just one on her way to the win.

Necedah 14, Brookwood 4 (5)

The Falcon bats went cold at Necedah, as the Cardinals’ defense allowed just four hits in an abbreviated game. Necedah swung away for 14 hits against Berg.

Necedah scored 4 runs, 3 runs, and 5 runs in each of the last three innings, respectively. Lindsey Murphy landed three hits and scored three times for the home team.

Also, Brookwood’s Faith Wathke hit a leadoff double and eventually scored on passed ball later in the first inning.

Watters, Angel Brueggen and Kate Hyatt each hit singles.

Poynette Jamboree | Richland Center 4, Brookwood 3

A methodical push through the first four innings was enough to give Brookwood a 3–2 advantage over Richland Center in the first game of the Poynette Jamboree on Saturday, May 6.

Wathke scored on a single by Marriott in the first inning. Then Hansen scored in the second as Alyssa Ottum grounded out to the pitcher. In the fourth inning, Hansen scored again on an error by the catcher.

Richland Center, which is coached by former Cashton head coach Caleb Hundt, scored two in the bottom of the fifth inning and would hold defensively to pick up the win.

Berg took the loss, striking out three and walking two.

Poynette Jamboree | Brookwood 8, Randolph 5

Another good start was the catalyst for the Falcons’ 8–5 win over the Rockets in their second game at the Poynette Jamboree on Saturday.

Brookwood scored three in the first inning on back-to-back singles by Hyatt and Hansen. Hansen’s single to centerfield drove in two runs.

The Falcons mustered only four hits as a team, led by Hyatt and Hansen, who drove in two runs a piece.

Berg struck out four and allowed just two runs.

Brookwood 10, Wonewoc-Center 6

Once again, Brookwood was outhit, but still managed to take the “W.”

The visiting Wolves tied the game at 2 in the third inning, but Brookwood bounced back in the bottom half of the inning, when Hyatt scored on a passed ball and Hansen crossed the plate after a fielding error on a ground ball.

Wonewoc-Center tied the game at six after scoring three in the top of the sixth, but Brookwood piled on four more runs in their next at-bat. Marriott scored the go-ahead run after Berg earned a walk with the bases loaded. Hyatt stole home two batters later, and Wathke singled to drive in Hansen and Berg.

Hyatt ended with three hits, including a double. Marriott hit a single and a double.

Berg allowed 11 hits, but struck out 10 and walked just two.

Brookwood will host Bangor on Thursday before playing in the Viroqua tournament on Saturday and will face Cashton in a doubleheader Monday afternoon at Cashton.

Panthers struggle at the plate, lose three

The three-game stretch that Royall slogged through last week may be the toughest stretch of games the team will face the rest of the season.

The Panthers faced both Bangor and Cashton, which now are tied at 8–1 atop the Scenic Bluffs Conference standings, as well as Brookwood, which is tied with Necedah for third place in the league.

Royall’s final five games feature four matchups with teams that are under .500 on the year. The only remaining winning team is Necedah, which Royall will see Monday afternoon.

Brookwood 10, Royall 5

The Panthers collected 10 hits from Brookwood pitcher Amy Berg, but committed eight errors in the field and couldn’t stop the visiting Falcons from scoring at will.

Grace Gaertner, Emma Herek and Claire Herek each had two hits in the loss.

Emma Herek singled to start the fourth inning, followed by a double by Gaertner. Ally Friedl grounded out, but scored Herek. Kaitlyn Gruen drove in Gaertner on a single, and Kirstin Lunde scored on an error as the Panthers cut away at Brookwood’s 9-run lead.

Savannah DeWitt singled in the seventh inning to drive in Emma Herek and Gaertner.

McKenzie Baeseman took the loss, allowing seven hits.

Cashton 17, Royall 0 (5)

The defending conference champions scored four runs in the first, seven in the third, and six in the fifth as they pummeled the Panthers with 18 hits.

Cashton’s Kyah Flock finished with four hits and four RBI.

Claire Herek landed two of Royall’s three hits, plus Gaertner added a single.

Taylor Flock earned the win after allowing just three hits, but striking out only two and walking one. Baeseman struck out four and walked eight. The Royall defense helped strand 11 Cashton runners on the bases.

Bangor 11, Royall 1 (6)

Bangor, fresh off its first league loss to New Lisbon the week prior, bounced back with a big first inning, scoring five runs and defeating Royall Monday afternoon.

The Cardinals added two runs in the second and fifth innings and one run in the third and sixth.

Bangor’s first two runs were scored on passed balls. Cora Kostuch batted two runs in with a single later in the inning.

Alea Fortier led the Cardinals’ offense with three hits and four runs scored.

Royall’s lone run came in the top of the fourth inning as Emma Herek drove in Emily Olson with a single.

Bangor’s Emma Wittmershaus struck out 12 and walked just one while allowing three hits. Baeseman gave up six hits, struck out three and walked 10.

Royall will host New Lisbon on Thursday and will stay at home to see Necedah and Kickapoo on Monday and Tuesday next week.
