The Brookwood baseball team rebounded from a late-game collapse at Necedah last week with a victory over New Lisbon on Monday night.
Brookwood 6, New Lisbon 3
The Falcons pounced on the Rockets early in Monday’s game, as Matt Hansen’s walk to start the game was the catalyst for a quality inning. Hansen stole second and went on to score after a single by Cory Ottum. Ottum did the same thing, as he stole second and scored on a single by Kolin Muehlenkamp. Brookwood finished the inning with 2 runs.
Muehlenkamp had another RBI single in the fourth, as did Colt Manley, to help the home team take a 4–1 lead. The Falcons tacked on 2 more before the seventh inning. New Lisbon threatened by putting 2 on, but a grounder to third for the third out ended the hopes of the Rockets’ comeback.
“Matthew Hansen pitched a terrific game on a day where we were short on experienced pitchers,” said coach Paul Olbert. “He has a good understanding of the game in general and really came through in the clutch.”
Necedah 7, Brookwood 6 (8)
A 4-run first inning was a fine cushion for the Brookwood baseball team at Necedah, but the Cardinals showed some grittiness by completing the comeback with a walk-off single in the eighth inning for a 7–6 victory on April 21.
The Falcons opened the game with three hits and capitalized on a pair of Necedah errors to take the early lead. After that, however, the team couldn’t string anything together until the sixth inning. Colt Manley doubled and was moved to third on a Conner Schueller single. Cory Ottum drove in the pair with a powerful shot into the outfield with two outs as Brookwood took a 6–3 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Matthew Hansen struck out the Cardinals’ leadoff hitter, but was followed by an error and a walk. The two scored on a wild throw to first, and Necedah had the tying run on second. A single allowed the Cardinals to tie things up and force extra innings.
Brookwood went down in order in the top of the eighth. Necedah’s chance to win the game increased quickly when Dane Moore singled. Moore advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a fielder’s choice. Logan Myhre joined Moore on base after getting walked, and Charlie Huschka finished the game with a blooper into centerfield to score Moore.
