The Brookwood softball team dropped a set of league games to conference-leading Cashton last week, but upended last-place Wonewoc-Center in another doubleheader Monday afternoon to remain in fifth place in the Scenic Bluffs Conference standings.
Cashton 15, Brookwood 0
Angel Brueggen had the lone hit for Brookwood, which was shut out by the Eagles in the first game of a doubleheader that had been moved from April 28 to April 29 due to rain.
Taking an insurmountable lead, Cashton led 8–0 going into the top of the seventh inning and scored 7 more runs. Brookwood had seven errors in the contest.
To lead the Eagles, Taylor Flock and Olivia Pieper each had three hits. Pieper and Anna Connelly tallied 3 RBI in the win.
Lindsey Kramer picked up the win after striking out three and walking one. Amy Berg struck out two and walked three.
Cashton 7, Brookwood 6
Brookwood outhit Cashton 10–7 and battled back after trailing twice in the game, but couldn’t close the deal before falling by a run in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader.
Going into the seventh inning, the game was tied at 6, and a single by Cashton’s Harley Hundt put the game-winning run on base. Kyah Flock sacrificed to send Hundt to second before Lindsey Kramer drew a walk to put two on base. Hundt stole third before Taylor Flock picked up a walk to load the bases. To send the game-winning run across the plate, Taylor Costello singled to right field on the first pitch.
Lydia Madrigal went 3–4 and had 3 RBI in the loss. Angel Brueggen was 2–4 at the plate, and five others picked up singles in the loss. Kramer and Pieper each had 2 hits for Cashton. Costello finished with 3 RBI.
Kramer earned the win after relieving Taylor Flock in the seventh inning. Amy Berg allowed just two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Brookwood 12, Wonewoc-Center 1 (5)
An early offensive outburst allowed the Falcons to take control of the Wolves at Wonewoc-Center in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader.
Brookwood drew two walks to start the game and scored its first run on an error. Alexa Watters hit a single to left, scoring the first earned run, which was followed by a sacrifice play by Jolene Stoner to score another. To help Brookwood take a 4–0 lead, Watters scored on an error with a throw to third.
Alex Decker took advantage of another Wonewoc-Center error before Kate Hyatt doubled to score Amy Berg. Angel Brueggen brought Hyatt in with a single to left field, and then scored herself after another error by the Wolves’ infield, and she was followed shortly after by Bridget Cleven. Lydia Madrigal scored the final run of the inning after taking home on a wild pitch.
In the second inning, Wonewoc-Center scored its lone run on a Brookwood error.
Berg got the win for Brookwood with five strikeouts and just two walks. Brookwood tallied just five hits against Wonewoc-Center’s Emily Tracy, who took the loss. The Wolves committed seven errors and left seven on base.
Brookwood 12, Wonewoc-Center 3
The Wonewoc-Center Wolves outhit Brookwood 8–4, but left eight on base in a 9-run loss in the nightcap Monday.
Brookwood scored in the bottom of the first inning and added six more in the second. In the third, the Falcons took a 10–0 lead after Amy Berg scored on a wild pitch, Kate Hyatt scored on a grounder by Bridget Cleven, and Angel Brueggen crossed the plate on another wild pitch.
Wonewoc-Center scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth, but Brookwood matched the effort with two more in the bottom of the fifth to set up the final score.
Brueggen led Brookwood with a 2–3 effort at the plate and a single RBI. Wonewoc-Center’s Madisyn Makal, Emily Tracy and Katelynn Miller each had two hits for the Wolves.
Brookwood 9, Mauston 1
The Falcons dropped Mauston in a non-conference road game April 26 behind a big day at the plate.
Brookwood scored five in the first inning and held its advantage the entirety of the game.
Four Falcons batters recorded multiple hits in the win, led by Alexa Watters who went 3–4 and tallied 3 RBI on the day. Ellen Marriott, Lydia Madrigal, and Jolene Stoner each had two hits.
Amy Berg allowed just five hits in seven innings of work and struck out four.
Around the SBC
New Lisbon felled Cashton 8–6 Monday afternoon to create a tie atop the league standings. Bangor has just two league losses and sits in third place behind the Rockets and Eagles.
Hillsboro avenged a loss to Necedah earlier in the year with a 12–9 win. The Tigers knocked off New Lisbon 9–4 last week to give the Rockets their first league loss of the year.
