The last month of the season has been tenuous for the Brookwood girls basketball team. The team lost three games in the past three weeks, narrowly avoided another loss, switched head coaches and had to fight back to stay in second place in the Scenic Bluffs Conference.
But the team has overcome its hardships and still managed to own second place — alone — after notching two wins in the final week of the regular season.
Brookwood 59, Wonewoc-Center 17
The Falcons dispatched Wonewoc-Center for the second time this season, this time without the help of the conference’s leading scorer, Allyson Nelson. The rest of the Falcons stepped up to secure the win, generating a balanced scoring effort as eight players contributed to the final.
Claudia Alcantar scored 17 points to lead the Falcons, and Angel Brueggen added 11. Amy Berg and Ellen Marriott combined for 17. Also, Rylee Hall and Line Lemarchand each scored 4, and Cassidy Green and Lydia Madrigal each added 3.
Wonewoc-Center’s Lesa Holloway scored 8.
Brookwood 51, Cashton 42
The score was knotted at 25 by halftime, when the Eagles were looking for the upset against the second-place Falcons on Feb. 17. The visiting birds did not comply, though, as they outscored the home team by 9 in the final half to head into regional play on the strength of back-to-back wins.
Allyson Nelson put in 16 points to lead all scorers, but Lydia Madrigal’s 11 was a nice complement. Marriott’s 8 and Berg’s 7 rounded out the top scorers.
Cashton’s Lexy Schroeder scored 15 in the loss.
