The Brookwood cross-country teams continued to show improvement last week as they battled alongside some of the biggest schools in the area, all in an effort to begin peaking for next week’s conference race, which they will host.

The Falcon boys know they will be entrenched in an epic duel with Hillsboro for the Scenic Bluffs Conference title next week. To possibly complicate matters, the majority of SBC squads should have full teams competing, meaning their runners also will be battling for all-conference spots and taking team points from each other.

But the Brookwood boys’ performances as of late have shown them that they can compete with the Tigers, who are led by individual conference-champion hopeful Dakota Wells. Brookwood is eager to win its fourth straight league title and its 12th overall. Hillsboro last won a league title in 2011 and has five SBC boys cross-country titles in its collection.

The boys ran at the Dick Mitchell Invite hosted by Central High School at Forest Hills Golf Course on Thursday and were among the three smallest participating schools. The team finished 11th of 13 teams, scoring 316 points.

Each of the five scoring runners finished in the first 19 minutes of the race. Heriberto Santiago and Zane Peterson led the team, and finished 55th and 57th, respectively. Chase Ferries was 67th overall and was immediately followed by Zach Leis and Adrian Degenhardt in 68th and 69th place. La Crosse Central’s Sam Pinkowski won the race with a time of 16:27.9, and Eastview (Minn.) won the meet with a score of 68.

The team fared a bit better at Monday’s Chileda Classic at Cedar Creek Golf Course in Onalaska. The top-three runners finished in less than 19 minutes. Ferries led the team with a 30th-place finish in a time of 18:53.8. Santiago was 32nd overall in 18:57.7 and was followed by Zane Peterson in 33rd place (18:58.6). Also, Miguel Sanchez was 49th overall; and Adrian Degenhardt, 50th, to help the team score 194 points, good enough for seventh place among 12 teams.

Arcadia’s Ramon Romero was first overall with a time of 16:37.4. With a score of 61, Onalaska won the meet, and Viroqua was second with 63 points.

Though the Falcon girls don’t seem to have an equal in next week’s conference race, the team has been competing against a number of teams that will challenge them at the Division 3 sectional for a state berth later this month.

The Brookwood girls finished ninth as a team with 211 points in last week’s meet at Forest Hills, trailing their sectional rivals Aquinas (third place, 90 points) and Cochrane-Fountain City (eighth place, 205 points).

Allyson Nelson finished 24th overall with a time of 21:51. Briana Nelson was 40th overall; Jackie Santiago, 46th; and Eva Dorn, 47th. Also, Georgia Barrientos was 54th overall, plus Molly Kotten was 56th and Myah Turek was 71st.

Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau’s Dana Feyen bested all runners with a time of 18:43.9. The La Crosse Central team scored just 36 points in its home-meet victory.

On Monday afternoon, the girls collected 177 points and an eighth-place finish at the Chileda Classic. But the team trailed sectional opponents: Aquinas (second, 84 points), Melrose-Mindoro (sixth place, 138 points), and Arcadia (seventh, 161 points).

Allyson Nelson was 21st overall with a time of 21:48.6. In a field of 89 runners, Briana Nelson was 32ndwith a time of 22:21.6.Barrientos, Dorn and Kotten rounded out scoring with finishes of 40th, 41st and 43rd.

G-E-T’s Feyen won the race with a time of 18:38.6.The La Crosse Logan girls won the team title with 63 points.

Brookwood will travel to Arcadia on Saturday in their its competition before next week’s SBC race. The first race is set for just after 10 a.m. at the Schultz Farm south of Arcadia.
