Falcon bats lead way in walk-off win over Westby

Brookwood baseball head coach Paul Olbert hopes the resiliency his team displayed in last week’s season opener against Westby is a sign of good things to come.

The Falcons fell into a hole by three runs in the top of the first inning, but bounced back again and again as they erased multiple deficits, finishing with a walk-off single to give Brookwood an 8–7 win.

Westby’s early advantage disappeared after Connor Schueller drove in two runs on a double in the bottom of the first. Brookwood tied it up in the second, but Westby pinned two more runs up in the fourth. In the same inning, Jaden Havlik helped the team tie it up at 5 after blasting a towering double.

The visiting Norsemen regained the lead in the top of the seventh after pushing two runs across. Once again, the Falcons rallied. Westby picked up an out early, but walked the next four batters. Jack Mulvaney singled to score one and tie the game at 7. Matthew Hansen, armed with a favorable 3–1 count, singled to left field to drive in the game-winning run.

Mulvaney was 3–5 on the night, while Hansen, Havlik and Scheuller each picked up two hits. The Falcons finished with 11 hits as a team but committed five errors. Westby had 10 hits and four errors.

Colton Brueggeman picked up the win after coming in relief, walking two and striking out two.

“We have a young bunch that can only improve throughout the season,” Olbert said. “Getting a win against a tough Division 2 program can do nothing but give our team some needed confidence.”

The Falcons earned their first win in eight tries against Westby and extended their home win streak to 16 games.

Brookwood starts the season 1–0, and Westby falls to 0-2 after losing its opener at C-FC earlier in the week.
