Eugene F. “Gene” McCann, 84, of Oelwein and formerly of Stanley, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 6, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, with Rev. Paul C. McManus and Deacon Jim Patera officiating.

Visitation will be from 3–8 p.m. Thursday and from 9–10 a.m. Friday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein. A K.C. Rosary will be at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and a military service by the Aurora American Legion Post 435 will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Parish Scripture Service will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein, Iowa, with military graveside service by the Aurora American Legion Post 435. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Aurora American Legion Post 435.

Eugene Frederick McCann was born Nov. 4, 1932, in Wilton, the son of Edward Joseph and Leone Elizabeth (Berendes) McCann. He graduated from Wilton High School in the class of 1950. Gene joined the U.S. Navy, for which he honorably served during the Korean War. He returned to Wilton, where he worked at Tillman’s Feed Store. Gene was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Tuttle on July 18, 1959, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Wilton. Gene became a salesman for Doboy Feed Company. He moved his family to Iowa and settled in Stanley, where they lived from 1972 until moving to Oelwein in 2015. Gene owned the Independence Feed Company and owned and operated the Arlington Feed Mill from 1979 until he retired in 2000.

Gene was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein Knights of Columbus and the Aurora American Legion Post 435. He was an avid Green Bay Packer stockholder and was co-chair of the Ashak McKern Memorial Scholarship Fund. Gene loved having fun, hunting, fishing, tinkering in the garage and spending time with his family. He was the heart and soul of many community projects that he was involved in.

Gene is survived by his five children, Matt (Diane) McCann of Hazleton, Greg (Sherry) McCann of Marion, Kathy (Mark) Bond of Arlington, Kevin (Bo) McCann of Readlyn and Michelle (Ted) Adams of Walker; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four siblings, Jay (Dona) McCann of Clarkston, Wash., Margaret (Tom) Polek of Lewiston, Idaho, Dennis McCann (Kim) of Janesville and Sue Ann (Tom) Buick of Grand Junction, Colo.; and his caretaker, Karen Boies of Hazleton.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Liz, on Dec. 14, 2015; two sons, Steven McCann and Edward McCann; and five brothers, Jack, Joe, Jerry, Jan and Mike.
