Edith E. Witt, 85, of Ontario died Saturday, April 22, 2017, surrounded by her family at the Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta.
She was born Sept. 23, 1931, to Harry and Mabel (Wallace) Delap on the family farm in Monroe County. She grew up in the Brush Creek area and was a member of the Ontario High School graduating class of 1949.
Edith was united in marriage to Ralph C. Witt on Aug. 16, 1949, at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death Jan. 16, 2008. Together, they farmed all of their lives on the family farm in the town of Wellington.
She was known for being a great baker, making cakes for all occasions and cookies and pies for her grandchildren. Edith was an excellent gardener and had a large garden, where she planted many vegetables and flowers, including beautiful roses and Star Gazer lilies.
She was a faithful member of St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving on the Ladies Aid and playing the organ for many years. She was also a member of Better Half Homemakers. Edith always enjoyed visiting with her neighbors and writing letters to stay in touch with her family and friends. She will always be remembered for her love of music, chocolate candies, and her hard work and determination. Edith was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a very proud grandma of all her grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann Everson of Holmen; a son, Scott (Genise) of Ontario; a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Witt of Madison; seven grandchildren and their families, Elizabeth “Lizzy” (Floyd) Ellis and their children, Cordelia and Finn of Bradenton, Fla., Katherine (George) Christianson and their children, Gwenyth and Eric of Seffner, Fla., Ben (Jessica) Everson and their children, Madeline Gibson, Noah, Avery, Cameron and Maxton Everson of Holmen, Kimberly (Mark) Hildreth and their children, Zoie, Isaac, and Asher of Norwalk, Iowa, Nikki (Sam) Witt Penwell of Chicago, Rachel (Derek) Salter of Madison, and Sarah (fiancé Aaron Schmitz) of Ontario; two sisters, Patty Lee of La Crosse and Sharon (Bob) Britt of Madison; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Pasch of Ontario and Joyce Sturtz of Wonewoc; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to her husband, Ralph, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a brother, Ernest Delap; a sister-in-law, Harriet Johnson; and three brothers-in-law, Orlando Lee, Aaron Pasch and Jim Johnson.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 24, at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on South Ridge, 25525 County Hwy. P, Ontario. Pastor William King will officiate. Burial will follow in the South Ridge Lutheran Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited at the church Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
