The Brookwood boys basketball team celebrated its first member of its 1,000-point club last week in a win at Cashton.

Robert Cunitz led the Falcons with 19 points as they picked up another win to help the team improve to 14–4 overall, but the story was the senior’s historical night.

Not only did Cunitz become BHS’s first boys basketball player to reach 1,000 points, but also he stayed atop the all-time scoring chart with at least six games left to play.

Coach Travis Anderson said, “He is the first boys basketball player to ever reach that milestone at Brookwood High School, and we are all very proud of him for this accomplishment. It was just awesome to see the entire team celebrate and be excited about another teammate’s successes.”

“Team chemistry is what makes our team very special, and to see that type of joy for another teammate is incredible.”

“Our kids came into the game very focused and started out very well on both ends of the floor,” Anderson said. “Our focus was to aggressively rebound the ball and push it down the court to get good looks in transition. We were able to do that early in the game and maintain pressure on the rim throughout the game to get the win.”

Cunitz led the team with19, as mentioned prior, but had plenty of help on offense, as Orrie Maurhoff added 13; Garrett Gerke, 12; and Kaden Laufenberg, 11. The trio of Maurhoff, Gerke and Laufenberg went 4–7, 5–8 and 5–8 from the floor, respectively.

Brady Butzler finished with 14 for Cashton.

Maurhoff’s 15 and Laufenberg’s 14 points helped the Falcons find a way past Wonewoc-Center on Feb. 9.

The visiting Falcons needed to find a way to separate from the Wolves after taking a narrow 2-point lead into halftime. They came back with a better defensive effort that set up the 15-point win.

“Once we got some momentum in the second half and ratcheted up our defense a bit, we were able to build a lead and get the win,” Anderson said. “All conference games on theroad are definitely a challenge, but I’mglad our team responded and got another win. We just try to build on the positives of each game and get better every day as we move closer to the tournament.”

Cunitz finished with 9; and Lukas Summerfield, 8.
