McKenzie Baeseman helped the Royall softball team force a season split with New Lisbon on May 10.
Not only did Baeseman pick up the win on the mound, but also she had a big day at the plate. The win required plenty of help from the rest of the team, though, as five players had multiple hits.
The Panthers, which lost to New Lisbon 5–4 earlier in the season, pounced on the Rockets early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Emily Olson opened the game with a single and finished the trip around the bases after a single from Baeseman. Baeseman would score after an infield error.
An offensive avalanche in the second inning set up Royall for good.
Royall collected seven singles, a walk and a hit batter before the first out was made. By then, the team had built a 10–0 lead. But a series of hits and errors allowed the Panthers to tack on four more, and they held a 14–0 lead by the end of the inning.
New Lisbon found its footing in the bottom of the second inning, when the team mustered six runs on four hits, three hit batters, and one error by the defense.
It was 15–9 in Royall’s favor going into the final inning. Royall added four more runs and held on in the field to lock up the win.
In total, the Panthers finished with 16 hits. McKenzie Baeseman, Claire Herek, and Destany Lawry each tallied three hits. Emily Olson and Kaylin Gruen each had 2. Herek and Baeseman had 4 RBIs, while Lawry had 3.
New Lisbon finished with nine total hits.
Royall collected 10 stolen bases, led by Lawry with 3 and Olson with 2.
Baeseman surrendered nine hits on the mound, walked just one and struck out none.
Royall is 6–7 on the season and 4–6 in league play.
