South Side News for May 21

By MYRNA FAUSKA

The merry month of May soon will come to a close, and this weekend will be the earliest Memorial Day celebration possible, as the 31st falls on Sunday this year. Therefore, on Monday, May 25, we will honor our service men and women and loved ones who have passed on. At St. Luke’s Church out on the east side of the neighborhood, the Kendall legionnaires will hold their tribute at 10 a.m. in the cemetery, and there will be a service at 10:30 a.m. in the church, with a potluck lunch afterward. All are invited to attend this blessed event.

Last week I neglected to mention that Patty Zirk had come up the hill to Evelyn Zirk’s with some plants on Saturday. On Tuesday, Frieda Jacobson brought Ev and Jerry a rhubarb dessert. On Thursday, Ev and Jerry met with niece and nephew Susan and Deno O’Connor of Midlands, Mich., along with Bruce Zirk of Dutch Hollow and Randy and Sue Zirk of Madison. They gathered for lunch at Marty’s Steakhouse in Reedsburg. On Friday, Jerry left to spend the weekend at his cabin in Hayward, Wis.

Vicki Koenig was at the Schumann homestead to mow lawn for her mom Ruth on Saturday. On Sunday, Mike Schumann of Reedsburg stopped in to see his mom in the morning.

On Wednesday morning, I picked up Evelyn Zirk, Nadine Preuss and Eileen Miller to go to the Hill Country Belles Red Hats 10th anniversary luncheon at Spring Valley in Union Center, where the group had met and formed the club in 2005.

After lunch, Lynette Vlasak arrived and informed me that she had just delivered my husband Dave to St. Joseph’s Gundersen Hospital urgent care in Hillsboro. Shirley Waddell offered to take my riders home so I could go over and see what was up. Dave was ultimately sent by ambulance to Gundersen Health Services in La Crosse, where he had emergency hernia surgery that evening. The operation went well, and he was able to come home the next day. He is healing well and getting better every day. If you ask him how he is, he says “ornery.”

On Saturday afternoon, Vicki Koenig stopped by to help us mow lawn, and on Sunday afternoon, Mike Schumann came by for a visit.

Ron and Arlene Garvens celebrated their anniversary Friday evening with Jim and Mary Parkhurst at Valley Inn. On Sunday the Parkhursts attended visitation for La Von Sheldon at Grace Community Church in Ontario.

On Friday, Allan Vlasak got a year older, and he and Heather joined Lowell and Arlys Zellmer, Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana at the home of Chip and Mary Marty for a celebration dinner.

Sally Dana had lunch at the Kendall Nutrition Site and attended the birthday club on Wednesday. On Thursday, Lynette Vlasak was in La Crosse for a library meeting and that evening she attended the Mount Horeb school band concert.

The Lord continues to bless us whether or not we deserve it. One of His major blessings is the calling of young men and women into the service of our country to lay their lives on the line to preserve the freedom and lifestyle we enjoy. Other countries force their young people to serve, but our military is a volunteer one, and we need to honor those who have answered the call on this special day set aside for that purpose on Monday. Attend a service at your local cemetery and enjoy the long weekend.
