Vanguards outlast Falcons in semifinal

By NATE BEIER | For the County Line

The Brookwood girls basketball team’s season came to a close last week following a 2-point loss at Wisconsin Heights in a WIAA regional semifinal.

“We talked before the game about having no regrets,” said head coach Greg Dull. “If we played our way with two groups of five as hard as we could, we could walk away at the end, sure we had done all we could, and that is exactly what happened.”

Brookwood opened the game a bit slower than its host, trailing 13–8 after the first quarter. However, the Falcons battled through several double-digit deficits to stay on the heels of the Vanguards, matching their 13 points in the second quarter and allowing just a 1-point addition on a 15–14 run in the third quarter.

Finally, in the fourth quarter, the Falcons offense opened up, as the teamclosed the gap with a 21–17 advantage and trailed 58–56 with just seconds to go. Brookwood managed to get a final shot off to tie the game, but it was discounted, as the officials said time expired before it fell, leaving the third-seeded Falcons wondering what could have been.

Amber Brueggen powered the Brookwood all night long, scoring a game-high 19 points. Ally Nelson, Briana Nelson and Cecilia Mendoza each added 9 in the losing effort.

Wisconsin Heights’ Kristen Barman led the Vanguards with 15, and Macenzie Kraemer added 14; and Haylee Adler, 13.

Brookwood falls to 18–6 on the year following the loss. Wisconsin Heights (18–6) went on to win the regional with a 53–49 victory at Riverdale (17–7) Feb. 28 and will face Aquinas (20–4) at La Crosse Central on Thursday.

Brookwood 68, Montello 36

The offense was on point for the Falcons’ WIAA tournament opener Feb. 24, as the team rolled to a 68–36 win over Montello (10–13).

Brookwood opened with a 20–8 first-quarter thumping and never looked back.

Briana Nelson scored a game-high 21 points to lead the way. Ally Nelson added 13; and Amber Brueggen, 12. In total, nine different players contributed to the final score for Brookwood.

Defensively, the host Falcons allowed just five Hilltoppers to add their names to the scorebook. Sarah Bubolz led the way with 15, and Danna Kendall added 9.

Royall girls bow out in second round

The third time wasn’t charming for the Royall girls basketball team, as the Panthers fell 62–31 to Hillsboro in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal contest.

Hillsboro put together a strong first half, outscoring Royall 29–11, and never looked back.

Freshman Sydney Johnson led all scorers with 18 in the Tigers’ winning effort. Destiny Shore added 14 and had 11 assists in the win.

Nicole Miller paced the Panthers with 14. Emma Herek added 5 in the loss.

Royall ends the season 8–16 on the year, two wins better than last year’s 6–17 mark.

Royall 50, New Lisbon 30

In one of the better offensive nights for Royall this year, the team was able to turn back New Lisbon in a regional quarterfinal 50–30.

The Panthers led 9–7 after the first quarter and extended their lead by 2 points in both the second and third quarters. However, Royall rallied in the fourth for a 19–5 run to set up the win.

Paige Hyer scored a career-high 24 points in the victory. Nicole Miller added 10 to the final. New Lisbon’s Adele Hanson led the Rockets with 12.
