Letter to the Editor: Helping the innocent

By DEB LAW | Ontario

On the way home from work Thursday, Feb. 12, I saw a dog laying on the side of the road, dead. It was across from an Amish residence, so I turned around and went to the door to ask if it was theirs. He came to the door, and I asked only to find out he had found it in the middle of the road and had put it off to the side. God love him.

It’s brown and white with a twine around its neck. It’s still laying there (in case anyone knows anything) on Highway 33. Had it been in the back of a truck and jumped, or had it broken loose and got hit? The reality is it’s still there, with no one coming. I know someone else whose dog has been missing. It’s a terrier-healer mix, and white with black spots. There is a spot on its side like a heart. If anyone has any information, please let me know.

In this day and age, I read more and more about abuse and neglect. I oftenwonder why people have pets or kids when they don’t take care of them. If you own an animal, take responsibility for it. If you have a child, don’t you care for him or her? Isn’t he or she fed, warm and loved?

Anyone who knows me (well, let’s faceit) knows I would do anything for an animal. I can’t fathom how anyone could abuse, neglect or cause harm to one. Ask for help if you need it. Run an ad. Find another place for it to be. Don’t just let another day go into another day when you know something’s got to be done or should be done for the sake of their well being. If anybody knows anything about abuse or neglect, do not be afraid to speak up. It is a small community here — yet — is it about “your” pride? Or the benefit and favor you would be doing for the one who really needs help?

The dog on the road … that tail lays still. There are other animals that are still alive that need your help. Let’s do what we can. We are the ones who can talk. They are the ones with the unconditional love. Remember, if you’ve ever owned an animal, think of the joy and laughter that they have brought into your life.

Thanks for your time. I hope this will help someone help the innocent.
