Virginia Irene Muellenberg, 90, of Norwalk passed away Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, at the Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta.

Virginia was born Feb. 23, 1924, to Jesse and Dorothy (Thomas) Shird in La Farge. On April 21, 1951, Virginia was united in holy matrimony to Edward J. Muellenberg. Together they farmed until 1976, when they retired and moved into Norwalk. Virginia was born a caregiver, and when she retired from farming, she had more love to give, so she started working as a nursing assistant in nursing homes, homecare and for hospice for nearly 20 years.

Virginia and Ed treasured the Norwalk community. They loved going to dances and playing cards with family and friends. Virginia was an active member of the altar society at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Being an exceptional wife, mother, and grandmother is an understatement when talking about Virginia. She was devoted to her family with her whole heart and soul. Her hero was her husband Ed. Her love for him never faltered through the years — it just got stronger.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Ed, the love of her life for 63 years; eight children, Rosemary (Jerry) Heilman, Nancy (Lavern) Weibel, Richard (Julie) Muellenberg, Robert (Vicki) Muellenberg, Jerome (Lana) Muellenberg, David (Patricia) Muellenberg, Diane (Robert) Berendes and Donna (Lori) Muellenberg; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; four siblings, Verna (Bob) Yarolimek, Phyllis Stingley, Peg Mossholder and Richard Shird; along with many other relatives and friends.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren, Kevin and Kim Weibel; three brothers; and three sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Norwalk. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Father Eugene Trainer will officiate. Visitation will be held Saturday from 9–11 a.m. at the church. The Torkelson Page-Smith Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

The family requested that memorials be given to the Morrow Memorial Home or to the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Virginia’s name. Virginia’s family would like to thank the Morrow Memorial Home and Hospice staff for their compassion and quality care they gave Virginia while she was there.
