Last week, as we were out and about on our regular errands, I remarked on how blessed some folks are to have their lawns graced by such beauty in the autumn, when their trees in all of their fall splendor. When we came up our road, I noticed that our yard full of oaks was also adorned in splendid color, and I realized that we, too, are truly blessed to be able to enjoy their brilliant hues as we look out our windows.
At the top of Zirk Hill, Evelyn and Jerry attended the memorial service for Brad Brooks at Grace Lutheran Church in Elroy on Friday. On Saturday, they were back at the church for a happier occasion attending the wedding of Chet and Contessa Clark with the reception at the Elroy Legion Hall.
The Schumann family has a lot of birthdays and anniversaries in October. Sunday Steve went up to the homestead and picked up his mom Ruth for a trip to Reedsburg where they celebrated at the home of Mike and Vickie Schumann with all who were able to be there.
On Wednesday, my husband Dave and I went to the Kendall Nutrition Site to get our flu shots and stayed for lunch with the regulars. Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana also came in to get shots and have lunch. On Thursday, nephew Jim Boles of Racine and Paul Gifford from Kenosha came to spend the day in our woods bow hunting and squirrel hunting. On Sunday after church, Dave and I went to Tomah to have dinner with Merle Micka at Perkins Restaurant. He had called on Friday and wanted to treat us to a meal. Afterward, we took a ride in the country northeast of town before taking him home.
The reason you didn’t hear about the news from the Garvens last weekend was they were in Madison for the state violet show at Olbrich Gardens and we didn’t get in touch before the deadline for this column. On Friday, Ron was on Oxford Avenue, attending Esther Vlasak’s auction, and on Saturday, Arlene joined some friends for a quilt show at Reedsburg High School.
Randy Parkhurst came from Orfordville, Wis., on Friday to accompany his dad Jim to the Vlasak auction. He spent the night, and after breakfast he went north of Kendall to visit his mother-in-law Elaine Woodard before heading back south.
On Tuesday evening, Lynette Vlasak and Sally Dana were at the Ontario Public Library for a Winding Rivers Library System meeting. On Friday the gals were among the folks attending Brad Brooks’ memorial service.
Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Brooks family and to all of those who have recently lost loved ones. Yesterday we heard about the tractor accident that took Gale Burkhalter and the death of Donna Thompson. We pray for God’s comfort and care for those who are left behind awaiting the time when all families will be reunited at the final judgment. Even in sadness we can praise the Lord.
