Letter to the Editor: Find a new site for the quarry

By JOAN RIPP | Wilton

This letter is in regard to the nonmetallic mine that Mathy Construction wants to put off Logan Road in the town of Wilton. Mathy should find a new site due to the negative impact it would have on the rural community that surrounds the potential site, the Elroy/Sparta Bike Trail, and the small businesses in and around the site.

The one business that would experience the biggest negative impact is the Tunnel Trail Campground. In my opinion, it is very selfish and unprofessional to choose a site for a quarry that would destroy another family’s business. A business that is as intrusive as a rock quarry has a responsibility to find a site that will have the least negative impact on its surroundings. Logan Road is the worst possible place for a quarry.

The Elroy/Sparta Bike Trail and tourism also will be impacted by the Mathy Quarry. People come for miles to ride the Elroy/Sparta Bike Trail. The bike riders absolutely love the trail. The bike trail recently won an award for being “The Best Family-Friendly Bike Trail” of all the state parks in Wisconsin. Please don’t take the bike trail and all of the tourism dollars it brings in for granted. Mathy Construction should choose another site for their quarry.

The quarry would also impact the citizens that live by the potential site. There are so many of us that are directly affected. At the board meeting where Mathy’s people explained the horrid details, they showed us other quarries that they owned. Not one of the other quarries had people around the site like this one would have. I hope as you read this you can put yourself in our position and understand that we are not against quarries, but rather we are trying to protect our property and lives. Greed is ugly and is showing its ugly face in this ordeal. There is more to life than money. What about integrity, compassion, humility, and kindness? I hope that you can feel our pain and have our back as we fight for our quality of life.
