Vernon County Sheriff's Report for Aug. 4–10

Tuesday, Aug. 5: Dalton Young of Baraboo, Wis., fell asleep while driving on County Highway WW, going through the intersection and crossing both lanes of Highway 33 in the town of Hillsboro. He then went over the embankment and into the ditch. Neither Young nor his two passengers, who also had been sleeping, were injured. All parties were wearing seatbelts.

Wednesday, Aug. 6: A concrete statue of the Virgin Mary was stolen from a yard on County Highway F in the town of Hillsboro.

Wednesday, Aug. 6: Benjamin Kimmet of Viroqua was towing a trailer on County Highway B in the town of Coon when it became unhitched and went through the backdoor of his vehicle. No injuries occurred.

Thursday, Aug. 7: It appeared that criminal damage to property had occurred at a weekend party on vacant property in the town of Genoa. A bonfire was made with bundles of snow fence, tobacco laths, and manure spreader tires still on the rim. Beer cans, beer bottles and trash were strewn about the property. Windows that had been stored in a barn were broken, as were windows of a topper, also in storage. A chair in the barn was destroyed.

Thursday, Aug. 7: A burglary occurred at an unlocked residence on Highway 33 in the town of Union. Cash, gas cans and a .22 Beretta were among the items stolen. A large amount of coins also were stolen, and the house was thoroughly ransacked.

Friday, Aug. 8: A burglary occurred at a residence on Beaver Creek Drive in the town of Greenwood. The door was damaged, the house was ransacked and cash and coins were stolen. Also, items were stolen from a jewelry box, and a Sentry dial safe was missing.

Friday, Aug. 8: Terry Neumeyer of New York lost control of his motorcycle on a curve of Highway 33 in the town of Whitestown. Ontario Ambulance Service took him to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hillsboro for treatment of his injuries. Neumeyer had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Saturday, Aug. 9: A small, dark SUV with a light red or orange strip on the side ran over a mailbox on Highway 162 in the town of Harmony. The vehicle did not stop and may have passenger-side damage.

Saturday, Aug. 9: Troy Strangstalien of Viroqua was westbound on Highway 14 in Coon Valley when he struck the rear of a vehicle driven by Cynthia Bakkestuen of Westby. Bakkestuen had been turning left into Kwik Trip. No injuries were reported.

Saturday, Aug. 9: A burglary occurred during the week at Highway 82 in the town of Sterling. A window was broken out of a shop and gasoline was stolen.

Sunday, Aug. 10: Megan Wichelt of Stoddard was at the stop sign at Main Street and Highway 35 in Genoa. She was behind a vehicle driven by Randolph Czaplewski of Trempealeau, Wis., who also was stopped at the stop sign. Wichelt attempted to leave the stop sign before Czaplewski and rear-ended his vehicle. No injuries occurred.

• Roberta Erlandson of Westby, on Highway 14, town of Coon

• Robert Erickson of Westby, on Highway 14, town of Coon
