Brookwood’s softball team faced a 10-2 deficit going into the fifth inning at Hillsboro on April 10. The momentum was all in the Tigers’ favor, as they had just put together an 8-run fourth-inning effort.
Kelly Wallace’s crew, however, was undeterred.
The Falcons chipped away in the fifth inning, outscoring Hillsboro 3-1. The bats got even hotter in the sixth, when the first seven batters reached base on hits or walks. That set up an 11-run inning that put Brookwood up 16-11. Amber Brueggen tallied 3 of her 6 RBIs, with a bases-clearing double in the sixth.
In the seventh, the Falcons put up 5 more to leave the final score 21-11 in favor of BHS.
Brueggen finished the day 4-5 at the plate, and Olivia Hansen was 3-6 with a team-high 7 RBIs. Letycia Madrigal recorded a pair of hits as well as a pair of stolen bases.
Mackenzie Berg got the win, but she walked 13 while picking up only two strikeouts.
Wallace said, “It was a tough night to pitch, but she (Berg) fought through to get the win.”
The rookie skipper said he was pleased with the team effort and its willingness to keep battling despite the deficit.
Brookwood (3-1) tallied 12 hits against Hillsboro, while allowing just 5 for the Tigers.
