Meeting on Ontario community garden set for April 21

By LAURIE ERICKSON | Ontario librarian

It’s time to plan the garden. The next meeting for the Ontario community garden has been changed to Monday, April 21, at 9:30 a.m. at the Ontario Public Library. Bring your ideas on how to make the garden even more productive this year. We will also talk about programs to offer throughout the season. Come and help us plan.

Bette Ferries of Ontario will offer a workshop on how to use crochet to decorate your knitting project Friday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. If you would like to join us, you need to knit a 6-by-12-inch swatch ahead of time. Knit 6 inches of garter and then 6 inches of stockinet stitch. Bring your swatch, extra yarn and a size “G” or “H” crochet hook.

Bette Ferries will offer a workshop entitled “Knit with a Miracle Loop” on Friday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Learn how to knit socks or other projects in the round without using double-point needles. This simple technique will make knitting socks, hats, sleeves or sweaters much easier. Call the library at 337-4651 for more information on needed supplies.

The book group will discuss “State of Wonder” by Ann Patchett at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 14.

According to the publisher’s synopsis, “‘State of Wonder’ is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside unimaginable loss. It is a tale that leads the reader into the very heart of darkness, and shows us what lies on the other side”

Stop in the library for a copy if you would like to join us.

Playgroup will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 16. Preschool children (3- to 5-year-olds) are invited to join us for stories, activities and crafts.

We will start our summer session of playgroups Wednesday, May 14, when we will begin exploring the garden. We hope it will be warm enough to begin planting.
