Carol L. Preuss, 85, of Clifton entered her heavenly home Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at Close to Home in Tomah after a short battle of cancer.

Carol was born March 11, 1928, to Edwin and Iva (Deoring) Woolever in Sauk County, in the town of La Valle. She graduated from Wonewoc High School in 1946. She attended Sauk County Normal School, where she graduated in 1948 and began her teaching career.

Carol was united in marriage to George Preuss on Oct. 16, 1948, at Peace Lutheran Church in Elroy. They lived near La Valle before they started farming in 1950 on Dorset Ridge near Wilton, where they lived for 40 years. In 1989, they purchased their retirement home near Clifton. In 1993, she retired from teaching after 41 years, 31 of those in the EKW School District at Elroy.

After retiring from teaching, Carol worked in the food department at Night Pasture in Clifton until she became caregiver for her husband George for several years.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Her hobbies included gardening, both vegetables and flowers, traveling and camping. She enjoyed reading and doing word finds. She liked to decorate her home for the holidays, especially Christmas. She truly enjoyed baking for her family her famous Christmas cutout cookies, which will truly be missed.

Carol was an active member of Fountain Lutheran Church. She served on the church council as a secretary for two terms and was a member of the Sarah Circle.

Carol is survived by one son, William “Bill” (Lisa), of Wilton; three daughters, Joy (Jim) Bever of Wilton, Betty “Jeannie” Anderson of Scottsville, Va., and Nancy “Jo” (Bob) Taylor of Omro, Wis.; a daughter-in-law, Beth Zweifel Preuss of New Lisbon; 13 grandchildren, Marie Preuss, Becky (Troy) Pribnow, Dan Bever, Jamie Bever, Genevieve Brown, Jasmine Brown, Jonathan Brown, Emily Anderson, Jessica (Joe) Moss, Ryan (Allie) Preuss, Matthew (Elizabeth) Hanson, Sara (Ryan) Hellerud and Cole Allen; and eight great-grandchildren, Camryn and Nolan Hanson, Mason and Hudson Moss, Aiden Gratz, Breanna Hellerud, Brock Bever, and Hazel Truesdale.

Carol is further survived by a brother, Lester (Rita) Woolever; a brother-in-law, Herman (Nadine) Preuss; two sisters-in-law, Gladys Gloede, and Margaret Preuss; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, on Feb. 22, 2010; her parents; a son, David Preuss; a son-in-law, Dale Anderson; an infant sister, Evelyn Woolever; three brothers-in-law, Eldon Preuss, Norbert Boeder and Raymond Gloede; and a sister-in-law, Adeline Boeder.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at Fountain Lutheran Church in the town of Fountain in rural Kendall. Pastor Wesley Dunbar will officiate. Burial will be in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery, Clifton. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home in Tomah and from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church.
